Russia Ukraine Attack: Kyiv Hit by Massive Missile and Drone Barrage
A major Russia Ukraine attack struck Kyiv and surrounding areas on August 20, 2026, killing at least 16 people and injuring around 40, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight assault lasted for hours and involved scores of missiles and drones.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 168 drones, along with cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Ukrainian forces reported intercepting nearly 90% of the drones and most cruise missiles, although officials did not provide details on how many ballistic missiles were stopped.
Several parts of Kyiv were damaged in the attack. A residential building in the Solomianskyi district suffered major destruction, while residential buildings, a school, children’s hospital and kindergarten were also reported damaged. More than 38,000 people sought shelter in Kyiv’s metro system during the assault.
Russian officials said the strikes targeted facilities linked to drone-component production, a military depot and a logistics hub. Ukraine, meanwhile, has continued striking Russian oil and logistics infrastructure as the conflict intensifies.
The latest attack comes as Ukraine faces continuing pressure on its air-defence systems, particularly its limited supply of US-made Patriot interceptors. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for additional air-defence support from Ukraine’s allies.
The escalation also raised concerns beyond Ukraine after drones entered or crashed in neighbouring countries, including Romania and Moldova. The developments underline the wider regional risks as the Russia-Ukraine war continues.
