Europe Wildfires 2026: Thousands Evacuated as Fires Spread
The Europe wildfires 2026 crisis is continuing across several countries, with major fires reported in Belgium, Greece, Spain and France. Emergency crews are facing difficult conditions as dry vegetation, strong winds and periods of extreme heat increase the risk of fast-moving fires.
In Belgium, firefighters are battling what has been described as the country’s largest wildfire on record in the High Fens nature reserve near the German border. The fire has burned around 3,000 hectares and forced evacuations in nearby communities. Rain and cooler weather on Monday provided some relief, but the blaze had not yet been fully contained.
Greece is also dealing with a deadly fire emergency. Two people died on the island of Salamina, west of Athens, while more than 500 people were evacuated as flames moved through populated areas. Strong winds made firefighting efforts more difficult.
France and Spain have also faced destructive fires this summer. In France, a major blaze in the Landes region burned about 1,700 hectares before being brought under control. In Spain, a soldier died while helping fight a wildfire in the Aragón region.
