Russian-Ukrainian War: A Russian warplane crashed on Monday after an engine failure in a residential area of the Russian city on the Sea of Azov, killing at least two people and igniting a blaze that engulfed several floors of a nine-story apartment building.

The Russian Defense Ministry said a Su-34 bomber crashed in the port city of Yesk after one of its engines caught fire while taking off for a training mission. It said the two crew members had been rescued safely, but the plane crashed in a residential area, sparking a fire as a large amount of fuel exploded on impact.

At least two residents were killed and 19 others were hospitalized with injuries, four of them in critical condition, local emergency officials said. Authorities reserved emergency rooms at local hospitals and scrambled medical planes. At least 17 apartments were affected by the fire and about 100 residents were evacuated.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed of the crash and ordered his health and emergencies ministers, as well as local governors, to the scene. The city of Yesk has a population of 90,000 and is home to a large Russian air force base.

Hours after the crash, regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev said emergency services managed to bring the fire under control without the need to evacuate residents of adjacent buildings. Video posted on the Russian messaging app channel showed a fire engulfing an apartment building, with the fighter jet’s weapons apparently detonating and making a loud noise.

The Su-34, a supersonic twin-engine bomber equipped with advanced sensors and weapons, is a key strike component of the Russian Air Force. The aircraft was used extensively in the Syrian war and fighting in Ukraine.Monday’s accident was the 10th reported non-combat crash of a Russian warplane since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine
