‘Scream VI’ Tops Box Office with Franchise Earnings of $44.5M | Entertainment

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oscars weekend belongs to “Scream VI” When it opened in theaters, the horror sequel set a record domestic gross of $44.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group co-production exceeded expectations, easily surpassing the series-high $32 million set in 1997 when Scream 2 opened.The film’s debut comes as Hollywood gears up Gathered at the 95th Academy Awards, Yet another reminder of how horror is one of the few box office sure things in the industry.

After a hiatus of more than a decade, the “Scream” series previously directed by Wes Craven and distributed by Weiss Films is finally seeing a full-fledged revival, led by “Wednesday” star Jenna Orr. A young cast led by Tega and Melissa Barrera.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette recreated the 27-year-old series’ meta-killer storyline and serial killer Ghostface, and it works. Last year’s “Scream V” grossed $137 million worldwide on a production budget of $24 million. In the latest chapter, Courtney Cox returns as reporter Gail Weathers, as does Hayden Panettiere, a Scream IV veteran. But this is the first Scream movie without Neve Campbell.

Scream VI was quickly green-lit after the success of V, and did quite well with critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 75% fresh rating. Moviegoers gave it a CinemaScore of “B+,” a decent rating for a horror film.

Last week’s hit “Tenet III,” slipped to second place after a release that beat expectations. The MGM spinoff “Rocky,” starring Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors, made $27.1 million in its second weekend. It quickly crossed $100 million at the theatrical office in the United States and Canada.

Columbia Pictures “65,” A sci-fi thriller starring Adam Driver as a space explorer stranded on a prehistoric Earth opened in third place with an estimated $12.3 million from 3,405 locations. It’s also probably better than expected for a film that received poor reviews from critics. (It’s just 35 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.) But “65” reportedly had a production budget of about $90 million, not including tax rebates.

Bobby Farrelly’s “champion” The film, which stars Woody Harrelson as a disgraced coach trying to lead his basketball team to the Special Olympics, opened with $5.2 million from 3,030 locations. Audiences (an “A” on CinemaScore) liked it more than critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes).
