Iraqi Artist Rand Abdul Jabbar Receives Richard Mille Art Prize at Louvre Abu Dhabi

DUBAI: Iraqi artist Rand Abdul Jabbar has won this year’s $60,000 Richard Mille Art Prize at a ceremony at the Louvre in Abu Dhabi.

Organized by the museum in association with Swiss watchmaking brand Richard Mille, the award is awarded to a multidisciplinary artist based in Abu Dhabi.

The artist was awarded for “Wonder on Earth, Heaven on Earth” (2019-present), which is on view during the Art Here exhibition through October 2022.

“I am delighted to be recognized among a group of peers whom I greatly respect and admire. The Richard Mille Art Prize represents a significant investment in the growth and development of an artist’s practice, instilling in them the capacity and drive to forge ahead in their pursuit. I would like to thank Louvre Abu Dhabi and Richard Mille for their generous support and thank the esteemed jury for their trust,” Abdul-Jabbar said in a statement.

To date, the artist’s work has been exhibited at Shubbak Festival (UK), SAVVY Contemporary (Germany), Rabat Biennale (Morocco), Biennale d’Orléans (France), Art Abu Dhabi, Jameel Art Centre, NYU Abu presents Dhabi Art Gallery and Warehouse 421 (UAE).

The museum also revealed that the theme for the upcoming third Richard Mille Art Prize will be “Transparency.” Curated by Maya El Khalil, the open call for the next edition will open on March 30th.
