Ski Dubai, in conjunction with the Dubai Sports Council and the Emirates Winter Sports Federation, hosted the first FIS-level slope-style skiing and snowboarding competition in West Asia.
The UAE was approved as a full member of the International Ski Federation (FIS) at this year’s International Ski Congress following a five-year campaign launched by Majid Al Futtaim and Ski Dubai in partnership with the UAE Winter Sports Federation.
Over two days (October 17-18), Ski Dubai hosted four FIS-approved ski and snowboard events with over 28 skiers and snowboarders from 7 countries participating Contest.
As many as 12 Emiratis also participated in the event.
Vidmar Klemen and Povilaviciute Medeine won gold in the men’s and women’s ski events. On the other hand, Coleman Harry and Lieshout Van Sam won gold medals in the men’s and women’s snowboard events.
Mohammad El Etri, Global Snow Vice President, Leisure, Entertainment and Cinema, Majid Al Futtaim, said: “We are very proud to be partnering with the Dubai Sports Council and the Emirates Winter Sports Federation in West Asia.
“At Ski Dubai, we’re committed to developing young talent and fostering a winter sports culture. We’ve been impressed by the amount of talent we’ve seen on the slopes over the past two days.
“Hosting an event like this is critical to realising our ambition to build a global snowsport destination in the heart of the desert and paves the way for skiers and snowboarders from around the world to represent their country on the international stage.”
Ski Dubai has driven tremendous growth in sports tourism in the region in recent years and fostered a winter sports culture in the UAE.
Every year, more than 80,000 people are introduced to skiing and snowboarding. The state-of-the-art facility has also established itself as a hub for international competitions, such as the World Cup and Para Snowboard World Cup, attracting competitors and spectators from all over the world and contributing to the UAE’s tourism industry.
Ski Dubai is the best indoor ski resort in the world, a title it has held for six consecutive years.
