ABU DHABI: The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) Abu Dhabi will hold its inaugural graduation ceremony at the Abu Dhabi Energy Center in Masdar City on June 4.
Some 59 graduates from more than 25 countries will be honored at the Abu Dhabi Energy Center in Masdar City.
The Class of 2023 includes the first cohort of master’s students in natural language processing (NLP), and the second cohort of graduates in machine learning and computer vision.
MBZUAI is the world’s first postgraduate research university dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and plays a vital role in many of the UAE Government’s strategic objectives, with AI considered a key component of future growth and prosperity.
AI Ecosystem
Dedicated to advancing AI as a global force for humanity, the university aims to develop local and international talent with the aim of creating an AI ecosystem that will position Abu Dhabi and the UAE as leaders in this transformative technology.
International students in the class of 2023 include Felicia Kovacs from Hungary and Kudaibergen Abutalip from Kazakhstan, who will earn master’s degrees in NLP and computer vision, respectively.

Felicia Kovacs, Hungary
Felicia Kovacs joined MBZUAI in 2021 after completing a BSc in Computer Science at Liverpool John Moores University.
At MBZUAI, Kovacs conducted multimodal fake news detection research aimed at developing AI solutions to help journalists detect content from interviews requiring fact-checking.
Kovacs said fake news is increasingly common on social media and in the media. “My research focused on a specific topic within the more general problem of multimodal fake news detection,” she said. Under the guidance of Prof. Preslav Nakov, NLP Associate Chair, NLP; and Dr. Shady Shehata, Affiliated Associate Prof. NLP, we explored Ways to help journalists and fact-checkers use AI to detect claims of interest for fact-checking.
This is an understudied but fundamental problem. So many claims are made every day, yet human fact-checking capabilities are very limited. Therefore, it is important to be able to spot and prioritize claims that are automatically fact-checked.
He noted: “MBZUAI offers increasing opportunities with one of the greatest faculties in the field of artificial intelligence. Data Driven Solutions
Kudaibergen Abutalip, a student from Kazakhstan, said he decided to choose MBZUAI because he wanted to deepen his understanding of artificial intelligence, including how to develop data-driven solutions and apply them to industry.
Abutalip discusses how he hopes to use computer vision to help solve challenges in healthcare, education, and the economy.
“My thesis was on variability in staining schemes, and our proposed method could potentially be used to enhance the ability of deep learning models to generalize to unseen images.
“In other words, our goal is to help machine learning systems analyze digitally scanned biopsy slides more accurately, thereby reducing potential errors. This is critical in healthcare and can help speed up many medical procedures, such as diagnosing disease and conducting Medical Research.”
“If I had to choose one word to describe my experience at MBZUAI, it would be ‘growth’. MBZUAI not only helped me acquire technical skills but also made new friends, all of which led to many memorable moments ,” he added.
