The Swings-N-Things Family Amusement Park in the town of Olmsted was recently named “World’s Greatest Family Entertainment Center/Amusement Park” by the TV show “World’s Greatest.”
The news came as a complete surprise to Tim Sorge, who co-owns Swings-N-Things with his wife Joanne.
“We had no idea we were being considered,” said Sorge, a Cleveland native who now lives in Medina County.
Now in its 18th season, the nationally acclaimed TV show researches more than 75,000 businesses and industries each year to find the “best of the best.”
This fall, Swings-N-Things will appear on “The World’s Greatest TV Show,” with the production crew shooting footage at the Olmsted town venue on July 15th.
“About six weeks ago, we got a call from one of the producers on the show saying we were finalists,” he said.
“I cut him off, ‘Excuse me, what is this going to cost us?’ I thought they were shooting a TV commercial or something like that.”
As it turns out, the recognition of “World’s Greatest TV Show” is not only unsolicited, but requires every recipient to be above reproach.
“They have a very precise system,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of research on them. We’ve been in the business for 41 years. I’ve had snow before, but we’ve gotten to a point where we’ve gotten really comfortable and they’re legal.
“They said they would need a lot of information if they were interested, so we provided them with about 12 pages. We didn’t hear anything for a while, and then the person in charge called and said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve been selected.'”
Built in 1982 as a stand-alone batting court on a rental property on the corner of Bagley and Stearns Roads, it has grown into a 13-acre family fun destination featuring two mini Golf course, batting green, go-kart track, bumper boat pond and homemade ice cream shop.
Recent additions include a paintball village, party room with bar and bar, and an outdoor laser tag arena.
As for why showrunners chose Swings-N-Things, the owners didn’t get a clear answer beyond the venue’s success, guest service and safety record.
“We’re not the newest, there are some parks out there that would be more exciting and newer,” he said. “But they found our story compelling. That’s a big part of it.
“We’re well known and respected within our industry, but our guests don’t care about that. They just want to have a good time at Swings-N-Things.”
