The Set Collection, a luxury branding agency of like-minded independent hotels, said that Hotel Esencia, one of Mexico’s most acclaimed hotels, will join as its first member hotel in the Americas Set Collection.
Hotel Esencia is a magnificent 50-acre estate located halfway between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Originally built as a private retreat for an Italian duchess, this mansion is located on the most beautiful beach of the Mayan Riviera and later turned into a hotel. A new chapter opened in 2014 with the arrival of new owner, Hollywood producer and entrepreneur Kevin Wendle.
The estate’s provenance as an aristocratic retreat was the guiding inspiration for its modern reimagining – a place where baby turtles emerge on the sand below, while paintings by Picasso and Eduardo Santier hang inside. The main building is the heart of the hotel, and surrounding walkways lead to just 47 whitewashed suites and 4 villas overlooking the Caribbean Sea, where guests can enjoy stunning design and total privacy.
The Esencia Mansion is one of the most luxurious accommodations the hotel offers its guests. Opening in 2022, the 12,000-square-foot resort is the ultimate Riviera Maya sanctuary. Designed by architect Peter Svenson and Hotel Esencia’s artistic director Juan Carlos Gutiérrez with Studio Giancarlo Valle Valle, the four-suite mansion features three swimming pools, a 20-seat movie theater, blue-chip artwork and an underground cocktail lounge. It is a true representation of the region’s majestic beauty and Mexican tradition of craftsmanship.
Restaurants at Hotel Esencia include Mistura, a seafood restaurant serving specialties from the Yucatan and beyond; Beefbar with branches in Paris, Mykonos and Dubai, and Taiyo, a Japanese sushi restaurant with omakase Bar and Mexican flavors.
The hotel’s spa is guarded by a statue of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, the Mayan god of love, the moon and fertility; many of its luxurious treatments are Mayan-inspired.
