The third unit of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates starts up

The UAE’s nuclear power plant marked an “important milestone” on Thursday with the start-up of the third of its four units.

The third unit business license Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Issued in June.

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, said the operating licence has been granted to Nawah Energy, the subsidiary of Emirates Nuclear Energy responsible for the operation of the nuclear power plant.

Nawah is licensed to operate Unit 3 for 60 years.

Emirates Nuclear Energy said it expected the reactor to be connected to the national grid “in the next few weeks”.

The start-up was the first time the device produced heat through nuclear fission. The heat is used to generate steam, which turns turbines to generate electricity.

Barakah is the first multi-unit nuclear power plant in operation in the region.

Its power generation will significantly reduce the use of gas-fired power stations to generate electricity in the country.

In February 2020 and March 2021, FANR issued operating licenses for Unit 1 and Unit 2, respectively.

Commercial operation of Unit 1, which began on April 18, 2021, prevented more than 5 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the energy it produced within a year.

This is the emissions if fossil fuel Instead, it is used to generate electricity.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) said in April that this is equivalent to “driving 1 million cars a year”.

Four units at the Barakah plant will generate enough electricity to meet 25% of the country’s energy needs. Now, that goal is halfway there.

Unit 2 Start commercial operation March 24th, less than a year away from the first unit.

Unit 3 will be completed in 2021 and Unit 4 is nearing completion.

Once put into commercial operation, Unit 3 will add another 1,400 MW of zero-carbon power capacity to the national grid, providing a significant boost to the UAE’s energy security and efforts to combat climate change.

Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Enec, said: “We today reached another important milestone in delivering the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme as we continue to provide the UAE with strategic clean energy.”

“The Barakah plant is leading the decarbonisation of the power sector, sustainably generating abundant electricity to meet growing demand and power growth.

“The UAE has developed a world-class nuclear programme that is based on experience and continually shares its lessons learned with its global counterparts, making the Barakah nuclear power plant a case study in the delivery of new nuclear projects around the world.”
