After 10 days on the big screen, Disney and the big-budget epic of the 20th century”Avatar: The Way of Water” ranked fifth at the annual box office with $855 million worldwide.
James Cameron’s long-delayed sequel has so far grossed $253.7 million domestically and $600 million internationally. Even with a harsh winter in North America and rising cases of COVID, RSV and flu around the world, the “Avatar” sequel is still poised to deliver strong box office results in the coming days. The $350 million pillar is aiming to hit the $1 billion mark by the end of the year. That’s a benchmark only two other films, “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World Reign” manage to reach in 2022.

Outside of North America, “Avatar 2” grossed the most in China with $100.5 million, followed by South Korea with $53 million, France with $52.3 million, India with $37 million and Germany with $35.7 million. There are several reasons why the follow-up film will struggle to reach the heights of its predecessor, which was the highest-grossing film in history with $2.97 billion worldwide. On the one hand, the global box office has yet to fully rebound from the pandemic, while key markets like China are experiencing a resurgence of the virus. Also, the sequel won’t be released in Russia, where the predecessor grossed $116 million.
Imax contributes a large chunk of global box office revenue, $97 million of which comes from the company’s premium screens. As with the original, pricier Imax and 3D tickets are expected to boost Avatar 2’s overall revenue.
“Avatar: Way of Water has demonstrated the strong stamina we expected at the global box office, especially with a strong international presence, with opening weekend growth in several key markets,” said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said. “Our screens remain the premier destination for experiencing this one-of-a-kind film.”
