To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced that it will bring to Abu Dhabi the most comprehensive exhibition of Impressionism the region has ever seen.

The exhibition, which runs from October 12, 2022 to February 5, 2023, will explore the new world that emerged from the mid-1850s to the end of the 19th century, highlighting the artist’s response to these times of profound economic and social change.

The exhibition features more than 100 paintings, 40 drawings and prints, 20 photographs and 5 dresses from the era, as well as a contemporary video installation.

The exhibition is mainly based on the Impressionist collection of the Musée d’Orsay, which is the first of its kind in the world.

Artwork also comes from the permanent collection of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, in conjunction with collections from prestigious French institutions such as: Bibliothèque Nationale, Museum of Decorative Arts, Louvre Museum.

In addition, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will present for the first time in the exhibition the “Chocolate Cup”, an important piece of the collection created by Pierre-Auguste Renoir between 1877 and 1878.

“Impressionism: The Pathway to Modernity” is curated by Sylvie Partry, Chief Curator/Deputy Director of Collections and Curatorial Affairs, Musée d’Orsay, and Stefan Geigen, Director, Scientific Advisor, Musée d’Orsay, and The Orangery The museum, with the support of Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Director of Science, Curatorial and Collection Management, Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “‘Impressionism: A Path to Modernity’ is a defining milestone for Louvre Abu Dhabi, which we are preparing to present in November this year. Celebrating its fifth anniversary and continuing to emphasize a strong commitment to creating world-class exhibits “with direct access to global art history. Bringing this avant-garde display of the 19th century to Abu Dhabi is a cultural and aesthetic feat, an opportunity for the entire region to discover the movement far from its Parisian birthplace. “

Highlights of the exhibition include a collection of artworks from the Louvre Abu Dhabi collection, including two paintings by Edouard Manet: ‘The Bohemian’ 1861-1862 and ‘With a Bag and a Bag’ 1861-1862 Still Life with Garlic”; Alfred Sisley’s The Road to Verrières, 1872, and Gustave Caillebotte’s Bezik Games, 1881.

Highlights of the Musée d’Orsay collection include: Edouard Manet’s Balcony, 1898-1869, Claude Monet’s Magpie, 1868-1869, Gustave The Floor Scraper by Gustave Caillebotte, 1875, The Hippodrome: The Amateur Jockey Edgar Degas 1876-1887 near the car, Paul Cezanne “Woman with a Coffee Pot” by Paul Cézanne, 1890-1895.
