Passports, wallets and watches top the list of misplaced trash in the UAE, a leading waste removal company has revealed.

Take My Junk CEO and founder Faisal Khan said they even returned a pet cat to its owner. “Our guy was driving back from a house with a truckload of unwanted items when they got the call. It was the guy who hired our services. He was asking about a missing cat.

“The moving team stopped the pickup and rummaged through the discarded items. Sure enough, the cat was there. As a result, the homeowner sent his old sofa, but did not find the pet cat hiding in the sofa. ’” Khan recalled. “We found a pet rabbit in a similar situation.”

Another time, Khan said, their garbage truck had to turn around and return a refrigerator that a maid had misdelivered. “The homeowner left instructions for dumping items. The maid believed the items included the refrigerator as well.”

Khan said they often found passports, wallets, watches, car keys and TV remotes in the crevices between sofa cushions. “All items were returned on time,” he said.

The Canadian expat founded the free service in 2009, which offered just one pickup at the time. Today, he has 35. They visit about 200 homes and offices every day and haul 1,000 tons of waste every month.

Kayaks, dog houses, red London telephone boxes are among the many unusual items that have recently popped up in their warehouse.

The goods are kept for about a month before being reused or recycled and resold at the company’s Bu Faisal thrift shop in Ajman.

“There’s very little to waste,” Khan said. “We reduce waste in landfill by bringing furniture and homeware back to life while providing people with an inexpensive alternative.”

One of his biggest concerns, Khan said, is the sudden increase in imitation trash removal companies, which charge between Dh200 and Dh400 per visit.

“Our service is completely free. So, if a company asks for money, be forewarned; it’s not us.”
