UAE Center Launches Falcon LLM, ‘Better, Faster’ ChatGPT Competitor

[ad_1]

DUBAI – Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) this week launched a rival generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform for Like ChatGPT3claiming that their underlying large language model (LLM), called Falcon LLM, performed better.

Falcon LLM, like Open AI’s popular ChatGPT3, learns language by being trained on vast amounts of digital text data to produce advanced conversational abilities that allow human-like communication and can interpret nuance to compose speech and poetry, answer questions and provide recommended level.

To do this, Falcon LLM says it uses 40 billion parameters, or parts of models learned from historical training data, compared to ChatGPT3’s 175 billion parameters, to teach its deep learning tool Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3 ), which claims to outperform the language processing capabilities of existing models.

Falcon LLM claims to use only 75% of the training computation time of GPT-3, and 40% and 80% of the computation time of DeepMind’s Chinchilla NLP and Google’s PaLM-62B.

The AI Cross-Center Unit at the AI and Digital Sciences Research Center (AIDRC) built Falcon LLM and before that created the world’s largest Arabic language model, Noor – possibly hinting that their model could do better in Arabic Digital conversation.

In addition to beating other models in computing time, the new product is less expensive to train, said Ebtesam Almazroui, director of AIDRC and project lead at Falcon LLM.

“We are pleased to announce the breakthrough achievement of our Falcon LLM 40B model, which significantly outperforms models such as BLOOM and GPT-3, even at a fraction of the size,” he said in the release.

More Falcon LLM developments will be announced in 2023, TII CEO Ray O. Johnson said. He added that the technology will bring its own AI success story to the region, in line with the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031 to develop the country’s education, government and energy sectors.

AI is used in almost every industry and will account for nearly 14% of the country’s GDP by 2030, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

TII said its model will provide companies and governments with local solutions to maintain data privacy and enhance the UAE government’s capabilities through artificial intelligence.

In early February, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that it will use ChatGPT to improve its customer and employee services, claiming to be the first UAE government entity and the first utility in the world to do so.

Mohammed AlKaff AlHashmi, co-founder and chief commercial officer of Haqq Association, a UAE-based digital financial services non-profit, told Al-Monitor last month, “For a company like DEWA to get real-time data on its users to build forecasts Analytics is very important.” AI programs can help companies accurately predict how consumers will behave in the future, he said.

But Kurt Muehmel, a strategic advisor at Everyday AI company Dataiku, said it’s unlikely and premature to use AI tools for any critical functions.

“I would advise them to proceed with caution,” he said, because while current technology is very good at generating texts, there is no guarantee that they are authentic, he told Al-Monitor in February.
