With fuel prices changing from month to month, UAE residents have come up with their own unique ways to budget for their monthly gas bills. While some have a fixed fuel budget and cut other expenses when prices rise, others just deal with fluctuations as they occur.

On Monday, the UAE announced retail fuel prices for November, up 29 fils per litre. It was the first increase in fuel prices in three months after hitting a record high in July.

Mansoor Ali runs his own landscaping business and every change in fuel prices means a change in his project budget. “When prices hit record highs[s] We changed a lot earlier this year,” he said.

“We would combine 2-3 trips into one. We would only drive to the site when necessary. After closely monitoring our gas spending, we started adding a miscellaneous tab to our project budget as a company, in order to bill customers when the cost of gas exceeds a predetermined limit.

Now that we’re used to this system, we won’t change it even if the price drops. I think it’s also good for the environment. “

Ali said he also took steps to reduce the cost of gasoline in his personal life. “We’ve swapped a petrol car for an electric one,” he said. “The difference in spending is significant. So we are now looking at replacing our second car as well.”

Starting today (November 1), Super 98 petrol is priced at AED 3.32 per litre, compared to AED 3.03 in October. The price of Special 95 petrol is AED 3.20 per litre, compared to AED 2.92 in October. E-Plus 91 petrol was priced at AED 3.13 per litre, compared to AED 2.85 per litre last month.

Dubai resident Mohammed Shameem said he budgeted fuel costs under “miscellaneous” each month, for which he set aside Dh750. “I get paid on the 25th of every month. If fuel prices go up, I’ll cut back on my weekly long drives [my] Or reduce the number of times we eat out. “

Depending on the type of vehicle you drive, filling a tank of petrol in November will cost you AED 14.79 to AED 21.46 more than in October.

Fateng, a Syrian expat who lives in Ajman and works in Dubai, does not have a monthly budget but has taken steps to minimize driving. “Earlier, I used to buy groceries at the store here,” she said. “But now, I’m looking for deals online, especially on items like dishwasher tablets, oil and toilet paper.

This has had a huge impact on my monthly spending. Also, as a family, we’ve been going out less since gas prices went up. Once you get used to this lifestyle, even if the price drops, you won’t make a change. “

Fuel prices in the UAE have been deregulated since August 2015 to tie them to global crude oil prices. According to the government, the move is designed to help rationalize fuel consumption and increase reliance on public transport and renewable energy.

Dubai resident Noel Pselis said he had no fuel budget and barely noticed the price increase. “I only commute once or twice a week,” he said. “I also usually take the metro to the Dubai Mall or the marina to meet friends and hang out with them.

Therefore, I only need to refuel my car once or twice a month. The price difference doesn’t matter [to me]. “
