Khalifa University of Science and Technology showcased several innovative clean and sustainable energy technology solutions at the World Future Energy Summit 2023 during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2023, a global initiative spearheaded by the UAE.

The Khalifa University booth showcased Seawater Energy and Agriculture Systems (SEAS) projects, concentrated solar thermal technology and artificial intelligence (AI) software tools for grid integration at an event at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (Adnec) .

The Center for Membrane and Advanced Water Technologies (CMAT) at Khalifa University demonstrated a fabricated biosensor for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in clinical and wastewater samples, a new technique for converting desalination waste into structural materials, and a solar desalination technology.

An overview of the Research and Innovation Center for Graphene and Two-dimensional Materials (RIC-2D) and the potential of graphene in energy, water, construction and lightweighting was also part of the presentation at Khalifa University’s booth.

Khalifa University faculty also hosted various workshops and conferences at WFES 2023, while 35 student members of outreach programs such as the Young Future Energy Leaders (YFEL) program and the Khalifa University Sustainable Development Goals (KU- SDG) Ambassador Program will participate in the Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) platform.

Dr Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-Chancellor of Khalifa University, said: “The projects and research programs presented by Khalifa University during ADSW 2023 target a range of stakeholders from the sustainability and clean energy industries.

“As a premier academic institution, we believe our initiatives will have a significant impact on the global stage and will not only contribute to the UAE’s net zero commitment, but will also support policy makers, industry leaders, Investors and entrepreneurs have an influential conversation on accelerating the climate process, especially ahead of the upcoming COP28.”

Dr. Steve Griffiths, Senior Vice President of Research and Development and Professor of Practice at Khalifa University, is participating in a panel discussion at the Green Hydrogen Summit titled “Green Hydrogen Innovation Stocktaking”. Dr. Griffiths will focus on noteworthy innovations and solutions, innovations across the value chain, and ways to accelerate the transition from R&D to implementation.

He also participated in a closed-door roundtable discussion on “Climate Resilient Infrastructure” at the annual Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy (WiSER) Forum.

Projects on display include the Seawater Energy and Agricultural Systems (SEAS) project, a flagship initiative of Khalifa University’s Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium (SBRC). The first commercial aircraft to use jet fuel produced by SBRC SEAS successfully made its maiden flight in January 2019.

The presentation on concentrated solar thermal technology will focus on Khalifa University’s Masdar Institute Solar Platform (MISP), which enables testing of concentrated solar (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) technologies.

The Stability Assessment, Visualization and Enhancement (SAVE) tool, a new artificial intelligence software for the integration of the UAE’s electricity system with renewable energy, will be showcased at the Khalifa University booth. Transco planning engineers are currently using the tool to assess the overall dynamic performance of their network during future expansion plans.

In addition to a new 3D printed fluid mesh for photothermal surface heating membrane distillation, an innovative biosensor that can detect SARS- CoV-2 (SHMD) for solar-powered desalination and a cost-effective and commercially viable brine abatement technology.
