With less than 20 days to go until the opening of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, fans in the UAE are eagerly awaiting the biggest football carnival.

It would be the icing on the cake if the UAE national football team were to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

The UAE missed out on the Qatar spectacle as they lost 2-1 to a strong Australian team in the play-offs in June.

It was a heartbreaking defeat that ended the UAE’s hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

Still, the UAE will play an important role once the football extravaganza kicks off in Qatar, as two Emirati officials have been named assistant referees for the match.

Mohamed Alhammadi and Hasan Almahri will call the shots in some of the big games in Qatar.

Two experienced UAE officials will assist match referees in making strong and fair decisions in the make-or-break moments of the high-intensity World Cup match in Qatar.

Alhammadi and Almahri have presided over several major international competitions and their resumes even include the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be chosen as the biggest sporting event in the world after a huge effort, and it makes years of sacrifice at work and time away from family so worth it,” Alhamadi told the AFC website.

The two officials made history when they hosted the 2019 Asian Cup quarter-finals in Dubai three years ago, the first match in Asian football history to witness a video assistant referee (VAR).

Almahri can’t wait for the Qatar World Cup to kick off now.

“It’s a great feeling to represent my country and the AFC at the biggest sporting event in the world. It’s the culmination of years of hard work that first culminated at the FIFA World Cup in Russia four years ago, and now again in Qatar FIFA World Cup,” he said.

After months of physical and mental preparation, the two senior officials will travel to Qatar.

“For me, it’s through physical preparation, reading the rules of the game and their new amendments, watching controversial cases (football decisions) around the world, and benefiting from learning points,” said Al Hammadi.

Almahri said it was an honour to be part of the 19-man team of match officials on the Asian continent at the World Cup.

“Preparation doesn’t start with announcing the match officials list, it’s a lifelong journey and process in Asian, international and local competitions,” he said.

“This includes preparing for the physical, mental, psychological and technical requirements to ensure you represent Asia on the biggest stage.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off on November 20 with the opener between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.

The final will take place on December 18 at the magnificent Lusail Iconic Stadium.
