UAE moon landing committee to meet this week to declare Eid al-Fitr

With less than two weeks to go until the longest public holiday of the year…

The UAE Lunar Observatory Committee will hold a meeting on Sunday, June 18 (Dhul Qadah 29) to signal the start of Eid al-Adha in 2023, Khaleej Times reported.

On Sunday, June 11, the Federal Office of Human Resources announced that the official date for Eid al-Fitr in the public sector is Dhu al-Hijjah from 9 am to 12 am.

For now, based on astronomical calculation, Dhul Hijjah will begin on Monday, June 19. Eid Al Adha, in Dhul Hijjah 10-12, will correspond to Wednesday, June 28 to Friday, June 30. Arafat Day, the day before Eid al-Fitr, will be on Tuesday, June 27.

If so, UAE residents will enjoy six public holidays From Tuesday 27th June to Friday 30th June. Those with Saturday and Sunday weekends will only be able to return to work on Monday, July 3.

What is Eid al-Adha?

According to tradition, Eid al-Fitr commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son at the behest of God. The Prophet Ibrahim told his son about the dream, and the son told his father to obey the command. But God intervened and sent a sheep to take His Son’s place.

When is the next public holiday after Hari Raya?

After Arafat and Eid al-Adha, the next public holiday Hijri New Year will be celebrated on Friday 21st July. So it will be a three-day weekend for those who normally have Saturdays and Sundays off.
