Some 1,680 drivers in Abu Dhabi have managed to reduce blackspots after taking advantage of the police’s special scheme in 2022. Many were also able to claim confiscated driver’s licenses.

Abu Dhabi Police on Wednesday revealed how their “Traffic Reduction Plan” – which was launched some time ago – will benefit motorists while raising public awareness of safe driving rules.

Black points are issued to individuals for traffic violations such as speeding, drink driving and reckless driving. The maximum threshold limit for such points for any driver’s license holder is 24.

If a person accumulates 24 black points, a traffic court can order the suspension or confiscation of his or her driver’s license. For some traffic violations, even if the black point is lower than 24, the vehicle may be impounded.

How Reduced Traffic Points Work

Abu Dhabi Police said drivers who accumulate up to 24 black points can attend an awareness course, which involves three items.

The first program awards riders who earn between 8 and 23 black points, with a maximum of 8 points deducted each year if they pass the class.

Drivers with 24 black points and a suspended driver’s license can benefit from courses under the second scheme; the third is for motorists who have obtained a car forfeiture order.

Arabic, English and Urdu courses are held at the following locations:

>> Police Department of Musaffah Traffic Point Scheme

>> Police Follow-up Unit, Zayed City, Al Dhafra District

>> Police follow-up department at “Morawab Al Qadim” building in Al Ain

Motorists can call 800 3333) or visit the police website for more information. Abu Dhabi Police said the program has been helping to improve drivers’ behavior on the road.
