UAE President, Vice President briefed on COP28 preparations


DUBAI: UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum listened Monday briefing on the country’s preparations for the COP28 meeting.

The UAE will host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai Expo City in November. COP28 expects 70,000 delegates from 198 countries to attend.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said: “Since its inception, the UAE has embarked on a journey of change. Sustainable development and climate action are part of our strategy to achieve sustained economic and social growth for present and future generations. Components” Nahyan.

Sheikh Mohamed added that the UAE is committed to fulfilling its role as a global convener and continuing to promote the environment and economy of the surrounding society in line with the approach set by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE Prosper the world, today and in the future.

His Highness noted that COP28 should involve all sectors of society across the country, and called on the High Commission to encourage stakeholders from government and the private sector to academia and civil society to play an active role in the preparations for COP28.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, reiterated the UAE’s approach to climate action by unlocking innovative and viable opportunities for shared prosperity and sustainable development.

Highlighting the urgent need to unite the world at COP28 in the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed welcomed participants from around the world to continue implementing the UAE’s message of “connecting minds, creating the future”.

“Today my brother, the UAE President and I were briefed on the ongoing preparations for COP28, which is expected to attract 70,000 people from 198 countries,” the vice president tweeted.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid added: “Our national team is ready and we are confident in our ability to welcome and host the world in our country to protect the planet.”

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of the COP28 Higher Committee, reiterated that the UAE, as a country at the crossroads of the world, is ideally positioned to bridge the gap between the global North and the global South. He also noted that the UAE can play a constructive role to bring about tangible progress towards a climate-safe world and provide opportunities for continued socio-economic development.

Sheikh Abdullah added that at COP28 the UAE must drive the shift from commitments to concrete actions and engage with all stakeholders who wish to contribute to action across key climate pillars to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President-designate of COP28, also provided a summary of ‘The Road to COP28’, the first event chaired by the COP28 President.

Held at Dubai Expo City on 15 March, the event strengthened youth engagement, united the wider community to raise awareness of climate change and mobilized all sectors of society in preparation for COP28. The event welcomed more than 3,000 participants, including government officials, foreign diplomats, students, young climate advocates, people of determination, senior citizens and representatives of sustainable businesses.
