The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced that the UAE leads the Middle East and Africa in terms of the number of approved medicines containing new active substances and the speed with which regulatory dossiers for medicines are evaluated and approved.

This was helped by the Minister’s reduction in the time required to evaluate new drug dossiers, resulting in the approval of 187 new drugs containing active ingredients over the study period.

The first study, prepared by US institution IQVIA, a world leader in using data, technology, advanced analytics and expertise to help clients advance healthcare and human health, includes data on innovative medicines registered from 2010 to 2018, with a focus on comparative Standards for registration and availability of innovative medicines containing new active substances. At the same time, the company released a second report containing drug marketing authorization data from 2018 to the first quarter of 2021.

Rapid approval of innovative biological drugs

The study also revealed that the UAE is one of the top three countries to rapidly approve innovative medicines and treatments, including but not limited to gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and vision loss. In addition, MoHAP has approved innovative biologic drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes that are only marketed in the US and UAE.

Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Regulatory Sector, said the Ministry of Health is committed to expediting the drug registration process, providing effective treatment to patients and supporting the pharmaceutical sector.

Dr Al Amiri emphasized that MoHAP is working hard to strengthen drug regulatory and control processes and therefore spares no effort to support local and foreign pharmaceutical businesses operating in the UAE, adding that the Ministry’s success in this area will only strengthen the UAE as a leader in healthcare and medicine. regional leaders.
