Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) narrowly claimed his second win of the season, beating Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny) in the final innings.

It took the competition jury about 15 minutes to declare the winner, and the two had almost nothing on the image of the finished photo.

In the end, Merlier emerged victorious, while Ewan was forced to wait another day for his season stats to work.

“I’m not sure, I know I danced well at the end, I know when I started the sprint it was still a good sprint, but then [Ewan] He’s coming from the back, you know if he comes from the back then he’s a danger. In the end, it was really close and we waited 15 minutes to see who won. I’m really proud that I got to win here,” Merrill said.

Merlier’s teammate Remco Evenepoel had an early advantage in the overall standings after many of his competitors were swept away by wind throughout the stage.

The stage was blown away by the crosswind almost immediately from the start. The peloton split in two and continued on in two smaller groups, with world champion Remko Evonpoel (Soudal Quick-Step) at the front.

UAE Team Emirates and its leaders find themselves back in Group 2 with a host of big name sprinters. A chase that lasted most of the stage brought the two previous moves together in the final 50km.

The pace slowed down shortly after, and it looked like the main force might even be back, but another late surge sent the small group kicking away again. This gave GC guys like Evenepoel and Pello Bilbao a big advantage on late race climbs.
