Verstappen explains Abu Dhabi GP F1 qualifying ‘panic’

The world champion was preparing for his first race in Q3 when his car came to a complete stop and some wild action took place in the Red Bull garage.

The delay meant Verstappen’s plan was to help drag teammates Sergio Perez When the Dutchman reset his car’s system, he had to be thrown out the window.

In the end, Verstappen was able to push on and was good enough on his first lap to secure pole, before going even better.

In the second round, Verstappen exited as scheduled and provided Perez with a slipstream to help the Mexican finish second when the Red Bull front row stopped.

Reflecting on his pole position, Verstappen said: “Qualifying was a bit up and down.

“It started off fine. The second quarter was a bit of a mess, I honestly don’t know why, but the tyres, I just couldn’t get a grip. But in the third quarter, everything felt more normal.

“[Then] We are a little scared. The car stalled before the first run, so we had to restart everything. Then we went out and both laps were good enough [for pole]so of course happy.

“But I’m also happy that both cars are at the front because we know, of course, we want to win races, but we also want to finish second in the championship with Checo. So it’s definitely a good start for tomorrow.”

“It’s a good start,” Perez said. “I don’t think we took the last step in the third quarter, especially as the third quarter wasn’t running that well. So we’re a little bit behind.

“But it’s good. It’s good to have the front row out tomorrow. Max did a good job for me. We worked together really strong as a team in the last game. So yeah, looking forward to tomorrow, that day Really matter.”

Despite Red Bull’s dominance in qualifying, Verstappen still predicts a close race on Sunday.

“Of course today was great, but I still hope it will be a good fight tomorrow,” he explained. “At least we have two cars out there and we can do what we want.”
