F1: Max Verstappen extended his record with his 15th win of the season in Abu Dhabi, with the Red Bull driver saying his team couldn’t do better in 2022.
The two-time champion, who won the season finale over Charles Leclerc, qualified on pole and led a lap on Sunday. Verstappen was ecstatic with his and the team’s performance.
Verstappen held off Sergio Perez at Turn 1 and on lap 20 switched his medium tires to hard tyres, which the Dutchman rode until eventually earning his 15th win of the season.
As for Perez and Leclerc, they are tied for second in the standings in this race, and they have launched a fierce battle. Perez pitted early on both of his stops, and Leclerc responded by extending his second stint and ensuring a one-stop strategy. The Red Bull driver closed in on Ferrari with four laps to go but was unable to get past P2 and so finished third, dropping to third in the standings behind Leclerc.
Hamilton’s retirement left Lando Norris sixth with McLaren and Esteban Ocon seventh with Alpine despite Fernando Alonso’s final race for Alpine Didn’t finish the race, but he finished fourth in the constructors’ championship. A two-stop strategy by Lance Stroll got him eighth.
Daniel Ricciardo’s one-stop strategy saw him finish ninth, just six-tenths ahead of retiring Sebastian Vettel, who was unable to overtake McLaren and take a point for Aspen Martin is level on points with Alfa Romeo but behind Sauber – running the team in the standings.
Yuki Tsunoda failed to pay off in the final stint on the soft tyre, missing points, while Alex Albon got off to a good start, ahead of Zhou Guanyu and one-stop Pierre Gasly, who started the race on the soft tyre.
Valtteri Bottas was 15th ahead of Mick Schumacher, who finished 16th in his final Haas appearance after receiving a 5-second penalty for bumping into Nicholas Latifi (who has since retired). Kevin Magnussen finished 17th as his one-stop strategy failed to work.
With the 2022 Formula 1 season wrapping up in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez and Vettel wrapped up Sunday’s race with some celebratory donuts – with the four-time champion in class Way out of F1.
Carlos Sainz won fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton – who had an early altercation with the Spaniard but was forced to return P4 to Ferrari after going wide at Turn 6 on lap 1 – attempted a one-stop Tactical but retired in the pit lane three laps later. That left Russell a lone fifth for the Mercedes.
