Israeli forces have killed three Palestinian militants and wounded dozens more in an arrest raid in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus.
The shootout came a day after the ceasefire ended three days of fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group in the Gaza Strip.
In a separate incident in the West Bank city of Hebron, a 17-year-old boy was killed by Israeli fire, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
The Israeli military said it was responding to the violent protests, including with live ammunition.
Israeli police say security forces surrounded the home of Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, who they say is wanted in connection with a series of shootings in the West Bank earlier this year.
They confirmed that al-Nabulsi and another Palestinian militant were killed in a shootout at the scene, and that troops found weapons and explosives in his home.
The Israeli military said troops were attacked by Palestinians throwing stones and explosives, and soldiers responded with live ammunition.
It confirmed the Palestinians were shot, but did not elaborate on their circumstances.
Three people were killed, al-Nabulsi, Islam Sabouh and Hussein Jamal Taha, and at least 40 others were injured, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, an armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party, later claimed the three were members and vowed revenge.
The Fatah party said the group “mourns its martyred son” and said the three “sacrificed their lives to defend our great people and their right to freedom and independence”.
Israel has carried out near-night arrest raids in the West Bank in recent months as part of a crackdown on Palestinian militant groups, mainly Islamic Jihad, following a series of deadly attacks on Israelis earlier this year that killed 19 people .
Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli forces during these arrests.
Last week, Israel arrested Bassam al-Saadi, a senior Islamic Jihad militant in the West Bank city of Jenin, in a nighttime operation.
The group said it was “maintaining vigilance” after Israel launched a series of attacks on Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday in what it said was a response to the militant group’s “imminent threat”.
At least 46 Palestinians, including 16 children and four women, were killed and 311 wounded during the three-day fighting in Gaza, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
According to the armed faction, 12 of the dead were Islamic Jihad militants, one was from a smaller armed group, and two were Hamas-affiliated police officers who were not involved in the fighting.
Israel estimates that a total of 47 Palestinians have been killed, including 14 from blazing Islamic Jihad rockets.
It said 20 militants and seven civilians were killed in Israeli airstrikes, and six deaths are still under investigation.
Caretaker Prime Minister Yar Lapid praised the cooperation of Israeli security personnel and said Naboosi’s killing “is another step in our uncompromising fight against terrorism”.
Abbas’ spokesman, Nabil Abu Rdeneh, warned that continued violence could further ignite the region, accusing the Israeli government of bloodshed on Palestinians to secure internal political capital ahead of November’s parliamentary elections.
Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, and Palestinians see it as the heartland of their future state.
Israel sees the West Bank as the Jewish biblical and historical heartland, and has built dozens of settlements that are now home to more than 400,000 Israelis.
Palestinians and much of the international community see Israeli settlements in the West Bank as a violation of international law and an obstacle to a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict.
