“Avatar: The Way of Water” continues to be unbalanced box office Mainland business China It topped the charts for a fourth weekend.
The film grossed $16.5 million (114 million yuan) between Friday and Sunday, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway. That accounted for 55 percent of the weekend’s total theater receipts nationwide.
As of Sunday night, the film had grossed more than $189 million (1.31 billion yuan), making it the highest-grossing Hollywood film to be released in China since 2022.

That total was unlikely just a few weeks ago, when ticket agency Maoyan raised its forecast for the film’s likely final gross to 1.5 billion yuan, or about $225 million.
“Avatar 2” was approved for release in China early enough for the distributor to launch a full-blown marketing campaign, book theaters and synchronize releases with North America and other territories.
The Chinese government’s subsequent decision to roll back most of its anti-COVID control measures was initially interpreted as further irritation for the film. But as sanitation measures were scaled back, the disease was able to wreak havoc on the population. This has led some to stay away from movie theaters, while others enjoy their newfound freedom.
The film took in $51.8 million in its opening weekend, an impressive figure given the recent malaise in China’s film industry, but still below many expectations.
Its weekend earnings halved on the second weekend (December 23-25, 2022), but then rebounded strongly on the weekend of December 30, 2022-January 2022. January 1, 2023. It took in $36.3 million in China for the third weekend.

The film’s dominance will likely continue into next weekend, as there are few major new releases to challenge it on-screen. However, the following weekend marks the start of the Chinese New Year, and there may be an update to the games on offer.
In a recent weekend, Maoyan Weiying’s “Better Man” took in $5.8 million at the box office, bringing its total to $29 million since Dec. 31. In third place is Wanda Pictures’ “Someday,” which has grossed $46.5 million since Dec. 24, taking in $4.7 million.
Japanese animation “Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes” grossed 5.9 million yuan (about $850,000) at the box office in its debut.
DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” took in 5.6 million yuan ($0.81 million) at the Chinese box office on Dec. 23. It now has a cumulative US$2.9 million (20.1 million RMB).
