Three creative Laois students and their art teacher will fly to the Middle East to represent the county and Ireland at the first Junk Kouture World Finals.
The World Finals of the inaugural Secondary School Fashion Recycling Competition will be held at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi on 11 January 2023.
The iconic gold venue will host high-octane events celebrating youth creativity, sustainability, performance and self-expression.
Alison Dalton from Ratheniska, Emma Tuohy from Vicarstown and Orlaith McNamara from Timahoe created ‘Minima’ in last year’s transition year and it was one of nine Irish creations selected for the World Finals. Judges Louise Walsh, Roz Purcell, Sulay and Stephen McLaughlin chose them to represent Ireland last May.
They were delighted to represent Ireland in a scintillating world final. Among the ten Irish finalists.
“We are very excited about Abu Dhabi and delighted that we have been given such an incredible opportunity. We cannot wait,” they told Leinster Express/Laois Live this week.
They went on to appear on the Late Late Show.
The name of their design Minima means “tiny” in Latin, and the costume is made from more than 100,000 tiny Styrofoam beads sourced from old bean bag chairs, medical bandages and wire hangers.
It was inspired by the trio’s favorite designer, Zac Posen, and his celebration of femininity and elegance in his pieces.
At the World Finals, each location will present six separate Urban Designer Awards, as well as the first-ever Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year Award. Other awards up for grabs include Glamor, Wearable Art, Innovation and Performance.
Sixty designers and their teams from schools in New York, London, Milan, Paris and Dublin will all fly to Abu Dhabi to compete for the title of World Designer of the Year.
Open to 13-18 year olds, Junk Kouture challenges young people to design, upcycle and create high end fashion from recycled waste, then showcase their designs and represent their school on stages around the world!
The girls will be accompanied by Fiona Fitzpatrick (Connolly), an art teacher from Monmelik.
