WASHINGTON, June 30 (AP) — The Biden administration’s special envoy for Iran has resigned, pending a review of his security clearance by U.S. authorities.

Rob Marley, who led the administration’s efforts to revive the faltering Iran nuclear deal and address issues related to Americans detained in Iran, has not been actively involved in the work for weeks.

There was no immediate indication why Malley’s clearance was being reviewed, but State Department officials said the agency’s Diplomatic Security Service was leading the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity on Thursday for privacy reasons.

Malley did not immediately respond to inquiries from The Associated Press about the situation, but said in a brief statement to multiple news outlets that he was “informed that my security clearance is under review.”

“I have not had any further information, but I hope the investigation will be resolved smoothly and quickly. In the meantime, I am on leave,” he said in the statement.

U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said earlier Thursday that Malley is officially staying on but is on leave and that his deputy, Abram Paley, is currently leading Iran affairs as acting special envoy.

Questions have arisen about Malley’s whereabouts since May 16, when he was absent from a classified congressional briefing on Iran. At the time, State Department officials told lawmakers that Malley was on “extended personal leave” and suggested his absence could be related to family health concerns. (Associated Press)
