ATLANTA, May 30 (AP) — The Carter family is sharing news that former first lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia, the Carter Center announced Tuesday.

“She continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying the spring in Plains and visiting with loved ones,” said a statement from the think tank founded by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife.

The center noted that Mrs. Carter had been a leading mental health advocate for most of her life, working to improve access to care and reduce the stigma around mental illness. The family said it was sharing the news in hopes of sparking conversations at kitchen tables and doctors’ offices to help people and their families get the support they need, the statement said.
