PITTSFIELD (USA), March 15 (AP) — A winter storm dumped heavy rain and wet snow on parts of the Northeast Tuesday, leaving tens of thousands without power, widespread school closures, dangerous driving conditions and a The plane skidded off the taxiway.

The storm’s track includes parts of New England, upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania, and northern New Jersey. Snowfall is expected to range from a few inches to a few feet by the end of Wednesday, depending on the region.

About two feet of snow fell in parts of upstate New York and the Catskills, with Indian Lake in New York’s Adirondacks recording 31 inches (79 centimeters). Gov. Kathy Hochul said some areas could see an extra foot by Wednesday morning.

“Heavy snow affecting much of the state today – and it’s not over yet,” Hochul tweeted late Tuesday. More than 74,700 homes were without power and windy nights were expected, she said.

More than two feet of snow fell in parts of New Hampshire on Tuesday, including the town of Bennington, which received 30 inches (76 centimeters), according to the National Weather Service.

Firefighters and police used chainsaws, shovels and bare hands to rescue a girl trapped under a fallen tree in Derry, New Hampshire. Authorities said the girl was playing outside with a parent clearing snow when the tree fell on top of her. The girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

All northbound lanes of Interstate 95 on the Piscataqua River Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire were closed for about an hour after a tractor-trailer became stuck on the bridge due to icy conditions.

Wet snow made driving dangerous, weighing down tree branches and causing sideslips in western Massachusetts’ Berkshires. Farther east, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, snowfall of up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) was reported, and Jean Guerrer said the conditions were too dangerous for him as a taxi driver in Boston to drive to work.

The storm arrived in the northeast early Tuesday as California faced warnings of more flooding, potentially damaging winds and difficult travel conditions on mountain roads as a new atmospheric river entered the marshes. So far this winter, California has been battered by 10 atmospheric rivers, long streams of moisture from the Pacific Ocean and powerful storms fueled by arctic air that produce blizzard conditions.

A Delta Air Lines plane veered off a paved road as it taxied to takeoff from Syracuse Airport in New York on Tuesday morning. Flight 1718 bound for New York City’s LaGuardia Airport slid into a grassy field, forcing passengers to disembark and take a bus back to the terminal, according to airport officials. No one was injured and the airport remains open.

“During takeoff taxiing this morning, the nose gear of a Delta aircraft cleared the paved surface of the taxiway,” Delta said in a statement. “This was not an aircraft that skidded off the runway.”

About 2,100 flights to, from or within the United States were canceled on Tuesday, with airports in the Boston and New York City area seeing the most cancellations, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

The storm closed Maine and local government offices, snow fell later in the day, and power outages climbed on Tuesday, with more than 79,000 customers affected Tuesday night. About 70,000 customers were without power in New Hampshire.

In Massachusetts, more than 57,000 customers were without power Tuesday night. More than 30,000 electric customers in Vermont were affected.

Snowfall of 2 inches (5 centimeters) or more per hour was expected at higher elevations in New York’s eastern Catskills, central Hudson Valley, central Taconics and Berkshires, the National Weather Service said. .

County Councilman Dustin Reidy, who lives in Albany, said he stocked up on groceries and prepared an emergency kit with candles, a flashlight and spare batteries.

“I don’t think the storm was as bad as it was on my neck of the woods, but I put a lot of trust in the snowplow,” said Reddy, who works from home.

The snowfall total will be the highest of the season, said Andrew Olison, a meteorologist with the College Park, Maryland, Weather Service Office.

“Snowfall has been below average in the Northeast this year, so this northeasterly wind is going to have a very big impact,” he said.

While snow fell at higher altitudes, authorities warned residents in coastal areas of possible flooding from the heavy rain. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph (80 kph) were possible on Long Island and southern Connecticut, New York’s National Weather Service said.

It was Election Day for town officials in New Hampshire, but more than 70 communities delayed voting because of the storm.

In Kingston, New Hampshire, police provided voters with transportation to polling places. In Will, polling places were without power, and officials had to install battery-powered lights until generators arrived. Interstate 93, the state’s main north-south route, was closed in both directions in Londonderry after power was lost.

In Connecticut, state offices and courts were closed Tuesday. State offices in New York are also closed.

The weather service said the storm was expected to wrap up on Wednesday, with snowfall expected to range from more than 2 feet (1 meter) to 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) at high elevations in New York, New Hampshire and western Massachusetts in Boston . (Associated Press)
