World News | Myanmar military holds talks with ethnic armed groups on holding elections

[ad_1]

Nay Pyi Taw [Myanmar]Jan. 7 (ANI): Myanmar’s military junta held discussions with three ethnic armed groups about holding polls in rebel-held areas, Al Jazeera on Saturday quoted a spokesman for one of the groups as saying.

According to reports, the Shan State Progressive Party, the United Wa State Party and the National Democratic Alliance Army have all participated in election negotiations.

Al Jazeera quoted state media on Friday as saying the three-day talks were taking place in the Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw. Leaders of the Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP), United Wa State Party (UWSP) and the National League for Democracy have been embroiled in escalating conflicts that have engulfed the country since the military’s coup in February 2021.

Last month, Myanmar’s military met with five ethnic rebel factions, who later issued a joint statement backing the regime’s plan to hold elections.

The UWSP’s military arm, the United Wa State Army (UWSA), has a standing force of approximately 25,000 troops, making it one of the largest non-state armies in the world. According to Al Jazeera, Myanmar has about 20 ethnic rebel armies that have been at war with each other and with each other for decades over demands for autonomy, control of the lucrative drug trade and the natural wealth of the country’s border areas.

The general election is often seen as an attempt to normalize the military’s use of the electoral process to seize power and produce results that ensure the general’s hold on power in Myanmar.

After 50 years of military control, the army’s takeover in 2021 has unraveled nearly a decade of democratic progress. Many were detained, including former US leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

In December, CNN reported that a Myanmar military court had sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison on corruption charges, bringing her total sentence to 33 years. The court found Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of corruption in buying, maintaining and leasing helicopters during natural disasters and state affairs.

According to CNN, sources said that San Suu Kyi now faces a total of 33 years in prison, including three years of hard labor, which means she may spend the rest of her life in prison. According to CNN, according to sources, Aung San Suu Kyi has previously been convicted of multiple crimes, including election fraud and accepting bribes. She has denied all allegations against her, several media outlets reported. (Arnie)
