kabul [Afghanistan]June 14 (ANI): Pakistan has deported some 531 Afghan refugees, including women and children, the Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said on Tuesday, Afghanistan-based Khaama Press reported.

The Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said in a tweet that Afghan refugees entered Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak crossing in South Kandahar province on Sunday and Monday, respectively, Khaama Press reported. It further said that the refugees were referred to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for necessary assistance.

The report said that after the Taliban took power in August 2021, thousands of Afghans fearing persecution and death threats fled Afghanistan and entered neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran in search of safety and job opportunities. In the past few months, Taliban officials have reported the forced or voluntary return of thousands of Afghan refugees from Iran and Turkey to the country.

Meanwhile, last week, Pakistani police arrested hundreds of Afghan nationals for failing to obtain legal residence permits (visas) from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other major cities, Khaama Press reported. Pakistan and Iran are imprisoning and deporting Afghan migrants to Afghanistan on a daily basis.

Over the years, Afghans have been forced to relocate to neighboring countries due to humanitarian crises and economic challenges. Afghan refugees in host countries face a variety of challenges, including legal status issues, unemployment, uncertainty and harassment from the police.

More than 2,000 Afghan refugees have returned to the country from Iran, the Afghanistan-based Khaama Press quoted the Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR). According to the Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR), at least 534 Afghan refugees have traveled to Afghanistan through Islam Qala in West Herat province.

It further said that out of 2,000 returnees, at least 288 were referred to the International Office for Migration (IOM) for basic necessary assistance. The number of Afghan refugees returning to Afghanistan from Iran has increased at an unprecedented rate in recent months for a number of reasons, the report said.

Earlier, the head of the Taliban’s refugee department, Nimruz Mawlavi Abdullah Reyaz, said more than 65,000 migrants had returned to Afghanistan through the Pul-e-Abresham crossing in the past month, Khaama Press reported. The Taliban-led Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said more than 527,000 Afghan refugees had returned to Afghanistan in 2022. (ANI)
