New Delhi [India]Feb. 12 (ANI): The 60th Para Field Hospital has won worldwide admiration for its selfless service to earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.

This isn’t the first time medical units have been in the limelight. The 60th Parachute Field Ambulance Unit, affectionately known as the “Angels in the Maroon Berets,” treated more than 200,000 people between 1950 and 1954.

During the Korean War (1950-53), India supported UN Security Council resolutions and deployed Army Medical Corps; 60th Parachute Field Ambulance, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel AG Rangaraj.

The unit landed at Pusan ​​on 20 November 1950 and was initially deployed in Pyongyang on 29 November 1950.

It was then divided into two sub-units; the “Frontline Unit” with the 27th British Brigade and the “Administrative Unit” in Daegu, assisting North Korean army hospitals and treating civilians.

The front-line units were in the midst of intense action, including a major airlift “Operation Tomahawk Tomahawk” with the U.S. Eighth Army in the Wenshan area from March 23-31, 1953, which involved combat with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Division The coalition then also repelled a massive enemy offensive on April 22, 1953.

On 1 July 1951, with the formation of the Commonwealth Division, the force was placed under the command of the 28th British Brigade. It then took part in a series of operations called “Operation Commando and Operation Killer” until August 23, 1953.

The unit had a total of 627 personnel, suffered 03 fatalities and 23 non-fatal casualties during its deployment, and treated more than 222,324 patients, including civilians, during the Korean War.

The unit has also received commendations from the US and South Korean Army chiefs of staff and from their parent formation, the 1st Commonwealth Division.

President Dr. Rajendra Prasad presented the Presidential Trophy to the 60th Para Field Ambulance in Agra on March 10, 1955, the first of its kind on their return to India , and so far the only one.

The unit also received 25 “Mentions in Dispatch” awards.

Colonel Rangaraj was awarded the well-deserved Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) for his leadership during Operation Tomahawk.

Carrying on the tradition, the Indian Army Medical Corps has demonstrated its relentless will to serve humanity amid natural disasters – the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.

Under “Operation Dost”, India has sent six aircraft to Turkey and Syria for earthquake relief with rescue workers, essential supplies and medical equipment.

A field hospital set up by the Indian Army to aid earthquake victims in Hatay, Turkey, began functioning on Thursday.

“Army field hospital in Iskenderun, Hatay, Turkey is operational with medical, surgical and emergency wards; X-ray lab and medical shop,” Foreign Minister S Jaishankar tweeted on Thursday.

An army field hospital was established under India’s “Operation Dost” to provide assistance to earthquake victims in Turkey.

Sharing a photo of the facility on Twitter on Wednesday, Jaishankar wrote: “This field hospital in Hatay, Turkey, will treat people affected by the earthquake. Our team of medical and intensive care specialists and equipment are ready to handle emergency situations .” (Arnie)
