A stampede at Madagascar’s national stadium during the Indian Ocean Island Games‘ opening ceremony led to 12 deaths and around 80 injuries, according to the prime minister.

The incident occurred at the Barea stadium’s entrance, where a crowd of 50,000 had gathered.

The cause remains unclear, but a similar incident in 2019 resulted in 15 deaths at the Mahamasina stadium.
