A History on Tap lecture will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Aiken County Historical Museum, 433 Newberry St. S.W. Chris Smith, author of “The Whole Okra: A Seed to Stem Celebration” will be the speaker. Light bites will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the lecture at 6:30 p.m. The theme of this summer’s series is The Foods We Celebrate. Belinda Smith-Sullivan will speak on Aug. 8. The summer band students of Barb Rollins will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Rollins’ Gazebo, 1651 Banks Mill Road. The music performed will be from the 1920s through the 1940s. The United Way of Aiken County will hold a Stuff the Bus event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 24, at Sam’s Club, 220 Jefferson Davis Highway. The United Way will be collecting school supplies for Aiken County students. Some suggested items include blue or black ink pens, three-ring binders, dry-erase markers, folders with pockets, crayons, erasers, lined paper, colored pencils, notebooks, washable markers, glue sticks, pencils, book bags, hand sanitizer or headphones. A celebration of Aiken County foods will be held Saturday, July 15, at the Aiken County Historical Museum, 433 Newberry St. S.W. The event will feature farmers market vendors, tastings of local recipes and produce, and cooking demonstrations by Jason Tufts, the chef at The Village Cafe. Gate Drive, will be collecting items to send care packages to the troops through Saturday, July 15, when a packing party will be held at 2 p.m. Items needed include sunblock, cooling towels, deodorant, socks, toothpaste, feminine hygiene items, snacks, portable fans, puzzle books or similar items.

The Back to Basics Alcoholics Anonymous group will meet in-person at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 961 Trail Ridge Road. Masks are encouraged for those who are not vaccinated. 

Pass the Salt food bank will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 15, at Central Baptist Church, 1652 Wire Road. Free food will be available for local families, and free school supplies will be available for kids.

The third annual Joe Jackson School Supply Giveaway will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at the Aiken County Recreation Center, 917 Jefferson Davis Highway. Calvary Chapel will hold a Christmas in July yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 21, and Saturday, July 22, at the chapel, 1411 E. Pine Log Road. On Saturday, a free outdoor festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will host several craft vendors, food trucks and various community groups. JULY 25

The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program will offer a free virtual training to those interested in becoming a volunteer Guardian ad Litem in Aiken County. GALs advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children who are involved in family court proceedings through the Department of Social Services. Interested volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have a clean criminal record, no prvious DSS case history and have time available to help.
