Entertainment Weekly has canceled its annual Comic-Con extravaganza due to uncertainty over the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“While we continue to await how SAG contract negotiations resolve, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Entertainment Weekly’s Comic-Con bash,” an Entertainment Weekly spokesperson said in a statement. The party is seen as a staple event at SDCC and we look forward to hosting it again in 2024 and beyond.Entertainment Weekly supports the writing and acting worlds as they continue to negotiate contracts and remain committed to celebrating them at the Hard Rock Hotel rooftop photography and video studio work and comprehensive coverage of the meeting.”
Major studios like Marvel and Warner Bros. Discovery have scaled back their presence at the convention.
The writers’ strike, and potential strikes by the Screen Actors Guild and SAG-AFTRA, have made it difficult for studios to attend the annual convention without products and actors to pitch their projects. If SAG-AFTRA cannot reach an agreement on a new labor contract and orders a strike, actors will not be able to do any promotional work for their films and TV shows as part of the shutdown.
If no deal is reached, SAG-AFTRA could order a strike anytime after its current contract with Hollywood studios expires on July 12. San Diego Comic-Con is scheduled for the July 21 weekend.
