Israeli’s PM and opposition leader unite in wartime government

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the creation of an “emergency government” with opposition leader Benny Gantz for the duration of the conflict with Gaza militants.

This “war cabinet” consists of Netanyahu, Gantz, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, with observers Gadi Eisenkot and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. There’s a reserved seat for opposition leader Yair Lapid.

The government will freeze its judicial overhaul during the conflict and focus solely on war-related matters.

Netanyahu’s allies will remain in government, and this arrangement comes after early elections disrupted a previous rotation agreement between Netanyahu and Gantz in 2020-2021.
