Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton wants to see Formula 1 transform careers, embrace diversity and make way for young people.
The most successful driver in F1 history, Hamilton was a guest at Expo 2020 Dubai with a record 103 victories and entertained fans of all races and ethnicities at the Al Wasl Dome.
The Brit looked back on the Hamilton Commission he created in June 2020 to get more ethnic minorities involved in motorsport and science.
“We set up the Hamilton Commission to find out the barriers to people trying to get into the sport,” he told host Chris McHardy in an onstage interview.
“For me, over the years, I’ve been successful, but I don’t really understand why I’m the only person of color who can get into the front row and be able to stay at the forefront of it all. Of course, there’s a bigger s reason.
“But Formula 1 is not diverse, it doesn’t look like this place (Expo 2020). But it has to look like this in the future, because a more diverse workforce is better for success,” he added. .
“I rely on all the leaders in our sport to do the right thing, invest in youth, remove those barriers and create better access for youth. So hopefully in the next 5 or 10 years, you will see this Sports look a lot like this place.”
The 37-year-old also said he had no plans to retire and reiterated that he still felt hungry.
“All I know is that I still love what I do, and I have a huge challenge ahead,” he said. “I didn’t expect at this age that I would be so sharp, so energetic, and still put in time and more than younger people.”
Talking about his chances of winning a record eighth F1 title, Hamilton said: “It’s impossible to know what the future holds, what it will be like, but it would be exciting to do something that no one else has done. It’s great for my family It means the whole world.”
The lovely Brit also made a stunning statement when he said he planned to change his name in honour of his mother Carmen Larbalestier.
“My mom’s name is Larbalestier and I was about to put that in my name because I really don’t fully understand the whole idea of women losing their names when people get married,” the Mercedes driver said.
Hamilton is currently preparing for the F1 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which kicks off this coming weekend.
“I’m coming back to fight for the eighth (champion) and that’s what I’m here for,” he said.
