Dubai, like Los Angeles, is a city known for its high standards of beauty, and a key part of the beauty routine is hair care. Now, one of Los Angeles’ most famous celebrity hairstylists – Jason Hermiz – is bringing his services to the Dubai market.
Hermiz – head stylist at Martinez-Samuel Salon in West Hollywood – has a lucrative client list of celebrities and entertainers, but he remains as down-to-earth and aggressive as ever.
We sat down with Hermiz to get to know him better and see what he has to offer for new clients in Dubai.
When and how did you start doing your hair?
In my early 20s, I knew I needed to figure out my career path. I am struggling and have no money. But when I went to hair salons before, I realized how much I liked the vibe and energy. So I found a stylist I looked up to and he let me apprentice with him. I like it so much. I did an apprenticeship for four years, going to people’s homes, experimenting, and fine-tuning my craft.
What is your expertise/strength?
My specialty is balayage and highlights for blondes and brunettes, and then I also do men’s haircuts with the excellent scissor combing technique. I do women’s hairstyles too!
What do you like most about what you do?
I love everything about my work, but I especially love my creativity. I can honestly say this is my passion. I never go to work and feel like ‘I have to work today’ because that’s my passion and I love meeting my clients.
What hairstyles are popular now?
I see more people leaning towards bigger, fuller curls for that ’90s blowout look. A lot of people are also doing curtain bangs, which are a fun and easy way to frame the face and add some texture. And then for those who are more adventurous, I even saw some chic versions about the shag hairstyle.
As long as you have this industry, what are some of your goals? What do you hope to achieve in your career?
Some of my goals are to expand my clients and business. Ultimately, I do want to have my salon, but my motivation isn’t just to hang my name on the wall. Instead, I wanted to create a space for clients to relax in a place where they don’t feel pretentious or ego. Right now, I have a great thing in the salon where I currently work, but one day, my salon will be a dream.
What is the tip of your hair that you live by?
A lot of people don’t know this, especially men, but it’s not good to wash your hair every day. A little build up is good as it will give you the look the next day. So, I tell a lot of my male clients to wash their hair every other day and they don’t need to wash their hair even if they get wet.
