AI-enhanced system at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi ensures faster, more accurate assessment and treatment for stroke patients
Highly complex system is one of many technological innovations being used by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi to transform patient care
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Mubadala Health partner Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has adopted another leading innovation. ARTIS Icono is the most advanced stroke interventional system in the region, combining 2D and 3D imaging with artificial intelligence. This potentially life-changing innovation is now being offered to patients in the UAE suffering from stroke, a serious condition caused by a blood clot in the brain.
“For patients with ischemic stroke, the most common type of stroke, timing is critical,” said Dr. Khalil Zahra, director of neurointerventional surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Neurology Institute in Abu Dhabi. Typically, the goal is to perform a so-called neurothrombectomy, which dissolves clots in a patient’s brain, within up to 6 hours after symptoms appear. This new system makes the process faster and more precise, which will save lives. “
In traditional stroke intervention, the patient starts with a CT scan, and the surgeon manually reviews the imaging before manipulating it to dissolve the blood clot. ARTIS Icono changes this process using artificial intelligence to deliver unparalleled image quality and real-time reconstruction. Surgeons can skip the CT scan and start treatment right away. This saves valuable time, provides better visibility for surgeons, and exposes patients to less harmful radiation.
“According to the World Health Organization, one in four people has a lifetime risk of stroke. In the UAE, around 25% of UAE adults have high blood pressure, putting our population at greater risk of stroke,” Zahra Dr. said. “Here, stroke is the leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death. It has never been more important to have the most innovative technology available to treat patients. This highly complex system will ultimately help us provide Stroke patients offer the best care and the best chance of recovery in the world.”
ARTIS Icono is just one of many technological innovations being used by the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, recently named the top smart hospital in the region by Newsweek, to bring patient care into the future.
The new system will be installed at the Cleveland Clinic’s Neurovascular Medicine Program and Stroke Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, which provides patients with stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases a full range of the latest diagnostic and treatment options.
In honor of World Stroke Day on October 29, the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is encouraging the community to use the acronym FAST to learn about the signs of a stroke—because a few minutes can save lives:
