Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s new booth encourages organ donation in UAE

The booth was inaugurated by Dr. Jorge Guzman, CEO of the hospital. He was also the first to sign up and register as an organ and tissue donor to encourage caregivers to sign up as donors.

The Ministry of Health launched the Abu Dhabi Community Campaign during the International Conference on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Initiative in November 2022. The campaign aims to encourage community members to register for organ and tissue donation and improve the quality of life of patients with organ failure.

Dr Ali Al Obaidli, Chairman of the UAE National Programme, said: “The UAE National Organ Donation and Transplantation Program has seen an increase in donations from post-mortem donors, which has led to impressive results in transplants of hearts, lungs, livers, pancreas and kidneys. Partnering with leading healthcare organizations such as the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, we have been able to take this initiative a step further and have successfully worked to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation and the life-changing opportunities they provide for patients in need. transplant.

“We encourage anyone over the age of 21 to sign up and be a part of this noble and humanitarian act, as the donor gives the recipient another chance at life, both in life and after death.”

As a multi-organ transplant centre, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has been a key partner of the DoH, performing leading procedures by experienced multidisciplinary specialists.

“The importance of organ donation cannot be overemphasized and all of us have a role to play in this life-changing opportunity. We are proud to partner with the DoH to advance the UAE’s larger vision for an organ donation initiative. The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, in alliance with the Cleveland Clinic Transplant Center in the United States, which has one of the most comprehensive transplant programs in the world, has performed more than 330 “life-changing” organ transplants since the launch of the deceased donation program in the UAE in 2017. The program has seen 124 deceased donors in the UAE whose organs have saved the lives of more than 438 patients and has grown exponentially over the years.

Through its Transplant Center, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has performed 166 kidney transplants, 136 liver transplants, 12 lung transplants, 12 heart transplants and 10 pancreas transplants.

Dr Bashir Sankari, Chairman of the Specialized Institute of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi and Head of the Transplant Program, said: “We have a multi-organ transplant program in the UAE that handles heart, single and double lung, liver and pancreas transplants. Transplants started in 2017 Since the program, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has achieved many milestones, including the first successful heart-lung-liver transplant in the UAE, the first combined kidney-pancreas transplant and combined kidney-liver transplant in the UAE.
