After joining the Sharjah Warriors, Marcus Stoinis became the first Australian player to sign for the UAE T20 League.
Stoinis will join the Melbourne Stars for the remainder of the Big Bash League before linking up with Sharjah for the close of the International League T20 tie.
The league is primarily seen as one of the biggest threats to the BBL, with several overseas stars leaving Australia to play in the UAE this week.
With funding from Indian Premier League franchise owners, clubs are able to sign as many as nine overseas players for salaries of up to $650,000 over a four-and-a-half-week season.
The league has previously tried to enlist the services of David Warner, while Chris Lynn will appear in this season’s game after playing the first 11 rounds of the BBL.
Stoinis’ exit differs from Lynn’s in that he holds an Australian cricket contract and the ILT20 clash with Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield.
“This is a huge opportunity for me personally to get some key minutes at a competition like the Emirates ahead of a busy year full of cricket,” Stoinis said in a statement.
“These are extremely exciting times for international franchise cricket and I am delighted to be part of a team like the Sharjah Warriors in the league’s history-making inaugural competition.”
