A young man has been fined Dh250,000 for insulting his cousin via social media after an argument by sending him abusive and obscene messages.
Arab men who remain in Al Ain will also be deported from the UAE.
Official court documents say the defendant and his cousin got into a heated argument over a family dispute.
The man then sent abusive and insulting messages to his cousin via social media. His cousin then reported him to authorities and presented evidence.
Prosecutors investigated the matter and charged the man with breaking internet laws.
He was handed over to the Al Ain Court of First Instance, which convicted him on the basis of evidence presented by prosecutors.
Khaled Al-Mazmi, a legal advisor and researcher, said that under Article 43 of the Federal Decree No. (34) of 2021 on combating rumors and electronic crimes, insulting and defaming via social media platforms are considered serious crimes and punishable by fines. Imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh250,000 and not more than Dh500,000 or either of these two penalties.
Al-Mazmi added that if the insult or defamation was directed at a public official or assigned to public service at the time or because of his job performance, this is considered an aggravating circumstance of the crime, noting that cybercrime is easy to prove.
He pointed out that the injured party is entitled to claim compensation for the damage caused under section 282 of the Code of Civil Transactions, since every damage caused to another party is obliged to ensure that the damage occurs even if the perpetrator is not aware of it.
