Randimal Gamage, a prominent activist of the “Aragalaya” people’s movement, has been arrested.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said Gamage was arrested on arrival at Katunayake airport from Dubai.
He further stated that “Aragalaya” militants were arrested for illegal entry into the Sri Lankan Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) during anti-government protests in 2022.
On July 13, 2022, SLCRC was forced to temporarily suspend transmissions after anti-government protesters stormed a state-owned media establishment.
A group of protesters who entered the venue demanded that they only broadcast news related to “anti-government protests” and entertainment. Protesters had about 15 minutes to get their stories across to viewers, after which the channel suspended transmissions.
The incident came as massive anti-government protests erupted in Sri Lanka calling for a change of government and the resignation of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid a severe economic crisis.
Meanwhile, former President Rajapaksa, who was also on vacation in Dubai, returned to Sri Lanka today.
