Tempe, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — It’s officially official: The Arizona Coyotes’ proposed arena and entertainment area will be voted on in May. On Thursday, the Tempe City Council voted unanimously to place Propositions 301, 302 and 303 on the special election ballot. If all three are approved, it would give developers the green light to begin construction on the $2.1 billion arena and entertainment district at the corner of Priest Drive at the end of Rio Salado Parkway and Tempe Town Lake. Supporters submitted more than double the number of signatures required to participate in the May 16 ballot, the city said. “Propositions 301, 302, and 303 represent a win-win for Tempe with no risk to taxpayers or the city. Private funding will be used to clean up landfills and transform them into landmarks that will bring great benefits to the City of Tempe and its residents Hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and public benefit,” said Nick Bastian, chairman of the Tempe winning committee, which backed the project.
The district proposal faces multiple votes before city council, including a Nov. 29 ballot that will allow supporters to sign ballots. Only Tempe voters can vote in the special election. The project faces opposition from some concerned about traffic and Phoenix Sky Harbor, which is concerned about the construction of its flight path. Voting on May 16 will be entirely by mail, and Tempe residents must register to vote by April 17 to participate.
