Shared in the official announcement of Carbon-Ti Component Supplier Team Emirates, competing in the UCI World Tour road race, are some new prototype ultralight carbon carrier center lock disc brake rotors. With the same core floating carbon + steel technology as the second generation 6-bolt rotors, these third generation centerlock rotors will finally be able to lighten your lightest modern road, gravel, cross, and even XC wheel center-lock hubs…

Carbon-Ti has long captured the attention of mountain bike lightweight riders and has been making 6-bolt carbon fiber rotors for years.we have been open I hope there is a central lock version Over the years since we’ve seen them update their lightweight X-Hub SP With center lock interface to reduce weight.

Now, thanks to a “new partnership for the 2023 cycling season”, as “Official Supplier to the Emirates Team”, Carbon-Ti has taken a closer look at their next-gen rotors and given us a glimpse at some of the other technical teams is playing.

Are they really center locks?

Carbon-Ti officially calls them the “New Center Lock X-Rotor SteelCarbon 3 Disc Rotor, Coming Soon”. But they apparently still have a 6-pin standoff, a protective spacer, and an alloy lock ring attached. There is now a modified carbon fiber carrier that is continuous around the common 6-bolt interface, presumably for more secure compatibility with 6-bolt and centerlock mounts.

what do we know

The new rotor bears the same X-Rotor SteelCarbon name as its predecessor – confirming the same basic technology – just adding #3 for the third generation to switch to Center Lock, or Center Lock as Carbon-Ti calls it. In fact, what seems to make these officially centerlock is that Carbon-Ti will now offer them with an approved 6-bolt to centerlock adapter.

The new carbon supports have more material to them, suggesting they may weigh a few grams more than gen2. They also look more or less woven from a similar 90° alternating carbon fiber weave. But… all Emirates rotors seem to be oddly sanded after the carbon finish, polishing the raised spots in the weave.

Otherwise, the outer ‘semi-floating’ stainless steel braking surfaces of these prototype 160mm discs appear to have the same shape and cutouts as the current Gen 2 rotors. They also use the same titanium rivets with the name Carbon-Ti laser etched on them to insulate the braking surface and its heat buildup from the carbon carrier.

Emirates’ other Carbon-Ti upgrades

In addition to the new rotor, Colnago V4Rs UAE Team Emirates’ cars equipped with Carbon-Ti X-carbide EVO The chainrings mate hard-anodized aluminum rings with carbon fiber carriers to save weight and increase the stiffness of the stock Shimano Dura-Ace rings.

Their ENVE SES 4.5 aero wheels are also bolted to machined alloy X-Lock EVO 12mm thru-axles.

Carbon-Ti says their lightweight components have already been driven by Tadej Pogačar at this season’s Amstel Gold Race and Tour of Flanders. We already knew he was an underweight man, found doing his seatpost Prototype Colnago last summer. We’re curious to see what other cutting techniques Carbon-Ti has in store for him next.
