CEBU CITY, Philippines – Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) wins Magis Eagles’ Mar Rota dish Consider his experience at the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) 13th Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia Camp in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The 6-foot-5 Magis Eagles big man is currently training with 79 other handpicked Asian high school basketball prospects, along with fellow Filipino Andy Gemao from Letran University Squires.

In an interview with CDN Digital, Rota said the camp was a huge “leap” for his fledgling basketball career.

“This training camp is definitely a leap forward for me. Not only will it improve my skills and abilities with the help of senior experts on the court, but it will also help me increase my passion for basketball. I know I will learn through this training camp.” With the help of my NBA coaches, I will stay focused and improve my technique,” said Rota, who is also a member of the Cebu School Sports Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Myth Five.

“This camp will teach me more about dedication, patience, bravery, how to get and Dealing with the ball, and how we deal with our real lives,” he added.

grateful experience

BWB training camp will end on Monday. It started on June 2 last year.

For Rota, he feels lucky and grateful as he sees this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to be trained by world class coaches from the NBA and FIBA.

Rota is not the first Cebuano to be selected for the prestigious international basketball camp. It will be recalled that one of the country’s top high school players and his teammate Jared Bahay from Barangay Mambaling also participated in the basketball camp.

More recently, another Magis Eagles rookie, Mandaue’s Henry Kristoffer Suico, was invited to the NBA Asia Academy Development Camp in Singapore last month.

“I feel so grateful and lucky because I was given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I was really surprised when I heard the news. It means a lot to me and I will try to learn more and go beyond my at its best,” explains Rota.

overcoming challenges

Aside from the excitement, Rota said frankly that he felt a lot of pressure in meeting new teammates and getting along with the coaches in training.

“The most challenging thing is when you meet new teammates at camp who are from different countries and different cultures,” Rota said.

“My secret to this challenge is communication. Get to know them, get along, have fun. So we have to stick together.”

Unknown to many, a group of ex-Magis Eagles players helped Rota pay his tuition fees at SHS-AdC during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

According to his head coach Rommel Rasmo, his former players helped Rota with his enrollment and tuition due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

Rasmo added that Rota barely made it into the registration period due to Covid-19 restrictions, but with the help of his players, Rota is now representing them on the international basketball stage.

“I started signing up for a lot of tryouts and interviews, and it was a long process. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it took me almost 2 years to officially join the Magis Eagles,” recalls Rota.

“I am very grateful to some of the Magis Eagles alumni players who have supported and helped me since I joined the Magis Eagles last year in 2021. Thank you so much for helping me, even in this pandemic time. You paid my tuition, started and Officially registered with SHS-Ateneo de Cebu. Thank you for helping us with basketball practice and training even though it is quarantine.”

He also thanked his family Rasmo, the Magis Eagles coaching staff, Magis Eagles donors, teachers and his fellow Bantayanons for their unwavering support.
