UAE, ILO sign cooperation agreement to strengthen labor inspection capacity

GENEVA, Switzerland – The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE), has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Labor Organization (ILO) to cooperate in the areas of labor inspection and occupational health and safety.

The agreement aims to develop the skills and competencies of the Ministry’s inspectors to enable them to proactively carry out inspection tasks and enhance their capabilities in accordance with best international practices and standards.

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation and head of the UAE delegation to the International Labor Conference in Geneva, participated in the signing of the agreement during the 111th session of the Conference this month, along with ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

The agreement was signed by Shayma Al Awadhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Communications and International Relations, and Dr Ruba Jaradat, ILO Regional Director for Arab States.

“We are committed to strengthening our partnership with the ILO and developing new avenues of collaboration to achieve our shared goal of protecting workers’ rights and achievements,” Al Awadhi said.

She added, “The signing of this cooperation agreement reflects the UAE’s comprehensive strategy to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of its labor market, bring in new talent and skilled professionals, and meet the highest international standards of excellence. It also ensures It regulates industrial relations, provides stability, increases productivity and creates more jobs.”

She noted that occupational safety and health is the Ministry’s top priority and is an ingrained practice in the UAE’s labor market culture.

“The ILC coincides with the entry into force of our lunch break – now in its 19th year – banning work in open areas or in direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm for three months, ’ said Al Awadi.
