Video circulating online shows fire in a high-rise residential building in the United Arab Emirates
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in the United Arab Emirates early Tuesday and was later contained, according to video circulating online.
Ajman is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which also includes the future cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There have been no reports of casualties from the fire in Ajman.
Video showed one corner of the building engulfed in flames, spreading from the ground to the top, with debris falling onto the street below.
Local media Ajman News later reported that the fire was under control. Video on Instagram showed firefighters patrolling the street below as the exterior of the building went black.
UAE officials were not immediately available for comment.
The UAE has seen a number of similar fires in recent years linked to the flammable cladding of many of the country’s ubiquitous high-rise buildings.
On New Year’s Eve 2015, a fire broke out in an upscale hotel and residential complex near the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. About 15 people were injured in the fire and the evacuation. Dubai Police ultimately blamed the fire on exposed wires.
Regulations implemented after the fire required that all such cladding be replaced with flame retardant materials.
