Abu Dhabi Prepares to Host 2026 UN Water Conference
Abu Dhabi is preparing to host the 2026 UN Water Conference from December 8 to 10, in partnership with Senegal. The UAE is finalising arrangements for the major international event, which will bring governments, businesses and organisations together to address global water challenges.
The conference will focus on water security, sustainable water management and improving access to clean water and sanitation. It will also support progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure sustainable water and sanitation for all.
Why the 2026 UN Water Conference Matters?
The conference is important because water shortages and access to safe water are becoming bigger challenges worldwide. Key areas of discussion will include:
- Water security: Addressing growing pressure on freshwater supplies.
- Climate challenges: Exploring solutions to water-related risks linked to climate change.
- Investment: Encouraging funding for water infrastructure and sustainable projects.
- Technology: Promoting innovation in areas such as desalination, water efficiency and management.
- Global cooperation: Connecting governments, businesses, investors and development organisations.
- SDG 6: Supporting international efforts to improve access to safe water and sanitation.
The UAE has already participated in international discussions ahead of the conference, including World Water Week 2026 in Stockholm, where it highlighted investment, innovation and partnerships in the water sector.
For Abu Dhabi, hosting the conference will also provide an opportunity to showcase the UAE’s experience in desalination, water efficiency and water security.
With the event scheduled for December, preparations are now focused on bringing international stakeholders together and turning water commitments into practical projects and long-term solutions.
